What is a breath? Is it just as simple as an inhale and exhale or is it more complex than that?
It is the very thing that keeps us alive, we breath and we don’t even know it. In our sleep, during a run, swimming, laughing so hard we think we stop breathing, but even then, we are still breathing. Scattered sharp breath when we get frightened or an open circular connected breath when we get excited. Intense breathing when we fall in love, hyperventilated breathing when we cry.
But what is a breath? In yoga our breathing is one of if not the most important thing. It keeps us present, it helps us move through the asanas and come into our bodies, it stills and calms the mind and relaxes us in our final resting pose savasana.
What is going to help me to remember to breathe? By remembering that to be fully in our bodies we NEED to breathe! My intention is to be in our bodies and to be seen, heard and felt, how can we do that if we are not even breathing?
To be seen is to breathe and let yourself be seen.
To be heard is to breathe between words so that you are truly heard.
To be felt is to breathe into the sensations of simply being felt.
To be in our bodies is to send breath to each and every part of it that we move.
To open our hearts is to breathe into love, to then be able to move from love.
What I learnt from coaching was that there is nothing the universe will give us that we cant handle. We can handle everything we do and feel with breath. If we feel fear, breathe. If we feel nervous, breathe. If we want to become present, breathe. To flow through life and in a yoga class, breathe. It is the most simplest thing, yet because its so close to us, its so unrecognised because OUR BODY does it everyday we easily forget. To not forget… just breathe!
